Ways To Protect Yourself From The Pandemic, COVID19

The number of coronavirus cases in Nigeria has kept increasing, as the epidemic that originated in China has infected more than 100,000 people worldwide.

Authorities have ordered the immediate suspension of work in most starts until further notice to prevent local transmission, while the central government made universal screening mandatory for all international passengers arriving in Nigeria.

The government also imposed travel restrictions on people from badly affected nations such as Italy, Iran and South Korea, adding to the previous screening of travellers from countries including China and Japan.

According to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) latest tally, more than 98,200 confirmed COVID-19 cases and at least 3,272 deaths have been reported globally.

More than 14,500 cases of the virus have been confirmed in 79 countries outside China, with Italy, Iran and South Korea recording nearly 270 deaths.

More than 3,000 have died in China with more than 80,400 cases since the disease known as COVID-19 was first reported last December in Hubei province, the epicentre of the outbreak.

However ever these are some ways provided by public health practitioners on how to stay safe during this time.

  1. Wash your hands frequently

Washing your hands with soap and water or using alcohol-based hand rub kills viruses that may be on your hands.

  1. Maintain distance

Maintain at least 1 metre distance between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing.

When someone coughs or sneezes, they spray small liquid droplets from their nose or mouth which may contain virus. If you are too close, you can breathe in the droplets, including the COVID-19 virus if the person coughing has the disease.

  1. Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth

Hands touch many surfaces and can pick up viruses. Once contaminated, hands can transfer the virus to your eyes, nose or mouth. From there, the virus can enter your body and can make you sick.

  1. Practice respiratory hygiene

This means covering your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze. Then dispose of the used tissue immediately since the droplets spread virus.

  1. Seek medical care early

Stay home if you feel unwell. If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention and call in advance. Follow the directions of your local health authority.

  1. Stay informed and follow the advice

Follow advice given by your healthcare provider, your national and local public health authority or your employer on how to protect yourself and others from COVID-19.
