Born in London to Nigerian parents, Abudu an entertainment entrepreneur spent her early years between the UK and Nigeria. The major recurring theme in her goal is the need to change the narrative about Africa and tell stories that resonate with every African, irrespective of their orientation, gender, belief or geography.
Mosunmola Abudu popularly known as Mo Abudu is described by Forbes as one of “Africa’s most successful women” and by CNN as the “African Oprah.” She holds a Master’s degree in Human Resource Management from the University of Westminster, London. Her career started in 1987 when she worked as a Recruitment Officer in Starform Group, a successful business information group in the UK. Mo was responsible for the research, design and production of several conferences and seminars. Mo Abudu relocated to Nigeria in 1993 and worked with Esso Exploration and Production Nigeria Limited (now ExxonMobil) as the head of their Human Resources and Administration. She learnt business discipline and how to build a corporate culture at ExxonMobile which came handy when she launched out on her own.
She is the Executive Producer and host of Moment with Mo. The talk show airs across 49 African countries and on a cable TV in UK. Mo Abudu has played host to many A list celebrities, governors, presidents, Nobel Laureates, including the US Secretary of State; Hilary Clinton and the managing director of IMF- Christine Lagarde. Mo Abudu is a visionary entrepreneur who had a future plan for her involvement in the media industry. Ebony Life TV was the hallmark of it and embodies it all. She launched EbonyLife TV, the first black entertainment and lifestyle global network in 2013. EbonyLife TV is a subsidiary of Media and Entertainment City Africa (MEC Africa).
In 2018, EbonyLife TV launched a number of new initiatives including the Video-On-Demand (VoD) service, EbonyLife ON in Africa and three project deal with Sony Pictures Television. In the same year, Sony Pictures Television announced it had struck a deal with EbonyLife to co-develop three TV projects, including a series based on the all-female army of the ancient West African kingdom of Dahomey. The deal was a first-time collaboration between an American TV production studio and a Nigerian production company.
In January 2020, American entertainment company AMC Networks announced its partnership with EbonyLife to produce Nigeria 2099, an afrofuturistic crime-drama.
Most recently, American streaming giant Netflix signed a multi-title deal with Mo Abudu’s EbonyLife to create two original series along with multiple branded films. Two among the multiple projects deal with Netflix include, a film adaptation of “Death and the King’s Horseman,” a play by Nobel Prize winner Wole Soyinka, and a series based on Lola Shoneyin’s best-selling debut novel, “The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives.”
One of her latest projects is EbonyLife Place, a luxurious lifestyle and entertainment resort, with a boutique hotel, restaurants, 5 luxury cinema screens, event hall and meeting rooms which she opened in December 2019 in the heart of Victoria Island, Lagos. Abudu is already on to the next thing: to redefine the future of entertainment in Nigeria and Africa. By the end of July, EbonyLife TV would be exiting DSTV.
