CAN WE PREDICT THE FUTURE OF DIGITALIZATION?

Digitalization seems like a big word, but it’s simply incorporating digital technology into everyday lives. It is the new ‘normal.’ It is a process that will end when humans stop conceiving possibilities only.

You make payments with your phone and FaceTime friends from anywhere!

This level of comfort wasn’t possible some ten (10) years ago.

Now, what happens to a world where everything can be digitized? A world where innovation is finding a way to make everything electronic. The truth is that tomorrow’s world will be heavily reliant on digital technologies, not a prophesy!

THE FUTURE OF DIGITALIZATION

There are a lot of controversies surrounding the advances in the digital world. We seem to become more hugely dependent on machines as the day passes, and we can’t imagine a world without androids, search engines, or artificial intelligence.

Digitalization will continue to grow as we continue to conceive possibilities of what can be. These possibilities are what give rise to the innovations that change the narrative of digital technology every day.

EMPLOYMENT

One of the primary sources of controversy around digital transformation is the dependence on machines to carry out human labour. The argument that what should be human-dominated is becoming dominated mainly by bots displacing human function in the labour market. Although these transformations will destroy several jobs and create new job opportunities, the increased need for new areas of expertise remains.

Agreeably, technology has created new roles in new fields. Now, we have website designers, digital analysts, digital marketers etcetera. Although the future of work is unpredictable, majority of these new jobs will need the collective input of humans and droids while there will be some jobs that droids cannot replace. Remember, the digitalization of creativity and emotional intelligence is almost impossible.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Artificial intelligence or “AI” is the intelligence of machines. They are mainly machines simulated to act like humans and solve problems that need cognitive reasoning.

Practically every new or emerging technology is based on Artificial Intelligence. From virtual assistants to self-driving cars and credit card fraud detectors, AI is a rapidly advancing reality.

Machines are being built to perform tasks that were once purely human.

AI experts are deducing that the advancing into Artificial General intelligence would be limited as there is no full understanding of the human brain. Therefore, it is impossible to create artificial intelligence that is more than the human capacity, at least from the most recent experience.

This impossibility is a logical argument, but even at this stage of development, robots and droids are already performing higher than human capacity tasks, so what is the guarantee for the experts’ limitation? Will Artificial Intelligence be more advanced than humans?

EDUCATION

Digitalization in education focuses on digitizing educational materials to make it easy for students to access them.

Also, the use of videos has hugely impacted the rate at which students assimilate and remember information. Online classes, tests and electronic materials have given room for students’ self-development and self-paced learning.

China, United States, and India are high on the list of countries with digitalized educational systems. And the current deduction is that the education sector will incorporate systems like artificial intelligence and virtual reality in the future.

Conclusively, change is the only constant thing globally, but certain values like hard work and dedication should not be misplaced rather than become machine-dependent even as the world changes.

Instead, it’s best to become technology-literate to prevent being lost in a room filled with new emerging opportunities.

The digital world might be the future, but learning should be a constant habit regardless of the balance between the advantages and disadvantages. Upgrading and re-learning digital skills should be incorporated especially as a school curriculum.

The effects of robotics and artificial intelligence will be felt by jobs that require low-level skills, even as digitalization creates more highly-skilled jobs. Eventually, it would pay off to upgrade and re-learn skills to remain productive and employable in the new age.
