5G is the fifth generation technology standard for broadband cellular networks predicted by the GSMAssociation to have more than 1.7 billion subscribers worldwide by 2025. A lot of misconceptions and conspiracy reports were being circulated, especially during the pandemic. But what is the 5G network all about?
WHAT IS 5G NETWORK?
It is a cellular network in which the service area is divided into small geographical areas called cells. All 5G wireless devices in a cell are connected to the internet and telephone network by radio wave through a local antenna in the cells. This technology stands out due to its greater bandwidth. It has a higher download speed, eventually up to 10gigabits per second (Gbit/sec). Its increased bandwidth allows it to be used as a general internet service provider for laptop & desktop computers. Another unique feature of this technology is that it would make more applications available to foster the use of the Internet Of Things and Machine-to-Machine operations.
FIFTH-GENERATION (5G) VS THE FOURTH GENERATION
The fourth generation was groundbreaking with a very fast internet connection and speed taking over from the previous 3G network. Technology has always needed to upgrade to not only provide access to the internet but also to power complex infrastructure. For example, smart cities connect everything from smartphones, homes, and cars, to traffic and even garbage collection systems. All these require a different level of network output. Therefore, we need a new form of cellular network.

Latency rate refers to the delay in between sending/receiving information. For the 4G network, it takes 20-30 milliseconds (Source: https://www.raconteur.net/). On the other hand, it takes the 5G network less than 10 milliseconds to send/receive information.
5G Is More Secured
In a time where a lot of data is classified and online, security is needed and must also be upgraded as required. For example, with people’s investments in the cloud (Blockchain), the 5G network would provide more than just fast access but also correct security levels to enable trust, and better protect users’ information.
With the introduction of the Internet of Things, Smart Cities, and other kinds of advanced technology. Here are some of the reasons why the 5G networks were created.
We are talking about cars that can drive themselves as they detect obstacles, follow maps, understand smart road signs, and communicate with other cars. A massive amount of data would be needed to carry out such tasks. Only a network with the right speed & latency can safely lead to millions of such cars on the road. It’s a different level of network service to make humans believe in them enough to use cars that drive themselves.

A network with a lot of enhancement would be spectacular in entertainment, with the use of Virtual Reality & Augmented Reality. Entertainment just got better. Humans can now get a 3-Dimensional view of games, movies, and sports.
There is no network without communication. This feature satisfies the very essence of cellular data. With 5G network, the sending and receiving of information would be done with lightning speed, reducing the amount of time we have to wait before getting the next task done.
