The BELT List: Highest Selling Nigerian Movies

The setting in “Omo Ghetto” to the hilarious adventure, filmed in “A Trip To Jamaica”, marked Nollywood movies that were spectacular not just in the quality of filming and performances but also the record sales accomplished by these Nigerian movies. This brings us to the movies that broke this record and made it to the BELT List of highest-selling Nigerian movies.

Omo Ghetto-The Saga

Director: Funke Akindele

Omo Ghetto-The Saga made it to screens in 2020, which marked a year rattled by the Covid 19 pandemic, but even this couldn’t stop Funke Akindele. The movie was directed by her alongside her husband, JJC Skills, and tells the story of Shalewa A.K.A lefty played by Funke. This tops the BELT List for the highest-selling Nigerian movies by domestic gross till today.

The Wedding Party

Many people love weddings especially when it’s the most talked-about wedding on screen. Probably why they had to make another installment a year later. The movie featured celebrity couple Adesua Etomi and Banky Wellington and a story about their characters’ wedding. A lot of drama ensued from their wedding processes which had to be handled to ensure that the wedding works. Family, friends, and foe were present to either wish them well or sabotage their efforts.

The Wedding Party 2 was created in 2017 and received as much support as the first version. This time it focused on an interracial union between a Nigerian man and a British woman. The movie was shot in Nigeria and Dubai with a record sale at the box office.

Chief Daddy

Following the success of The Wedding Party 2, Niyi AKinmolayan graced his fans with another stellar movie about a deep family controversy involving Chief Daddy’s wealth after his demise. Wives and mistresses gather to plan a befitting burial and also figure out how to get a share of the Chief’s money.

Sugar Rush

The movie released in 2019 and starred Adesua Etomi, Bisola Aiyeola, and Bimbo Ademoye made quite the impression. The film was based on the experience of these three young ladies rising from poverty to wealth and what comes after it, along with the many sacrifices and their irrational desire for wealth.

King of Boys

Another movie by Kemi Adetiba that did very well is the King of Boys. The film displayed daring performances by Sola Sobowale, Adesua Etomi, and star rapper, Reminisce. The King of Boys focused on Laburu (Sola Sobowale) and her exploits as the city’s kingpin as she brought down anyone that dared to be an obstruction in her exploits.

Merry Men

This movie made it to the big screens in 2018 and contained renowned performances by some of Nollywood’s finest actors like Ramsey Nouah, Jim Iyke, and Nigerian comedian, A.Y Makun.

The adventures of the Merry Men continued in 2019 with the release of “Another Mission”. The real Yoruba demons as depicted in part 1 would come together again for another difficult task, one they eventually pulled off.

Your Excellency marked Funke Akindele’s debut movie as a director. A film that didn’t do poorly and is still on the list of highest-selling Nigerian movies of all time. The movie made its release in December 2019.

A Trip To Jamaica

All hell breaks loose when Akpos (A.Y) decides to take a trip to Jamaica. This adventurous comedy was released in 2016 and made a good impact at the Box Office.
